A Different Butterfly

ButterLast summer marked the 50th anniversary of the release of the second LP from Iron Butterfly...a band that came screaming out of the late '60s L.A. music cauldron with a keyboard-heavy sound and a then-unheard of 17-minute track called In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

They're continuing their victory lap tour across America this year and they'll be playing the oldies-friendly Arcada in St. Charles IL on March 24th with Vanilla Fudge and Head East. And, I must admit...I went to the band's website to see who's still playing from that iteration of the band.

No one.

To be sure, bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Erik Brann have departed terra firma. Drummer Ron Bushy has had some health issues. And, lead vocalist Doug Ingle is listed on the website as no longer performing. So...seeing an Iron Butterfly show in 2019 is, sadly, seeing a cover band.

Nonetheless, it is worth a fond backward glance on this Music Friday to the song that broke them wide open. This is In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
