John Geils

JgIt is usually the the vocalist for whom the band is named. But, not the J. Geils Band.

While Peter Wolf was the flamboyant face of the band from Worcester, it was John Geils that was its heart and soul.

When people ask me to name the best show I ever saw, it would be easy to tick off stadium-sized acts like the Stones or Kiss.

But, it was the J. Geils Band (with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes opening) at the Aragon Ballroom (or, as Chicagoans call it, the Arrogant Brawlroom) in the late 70s...before the pivot to radio friendly hits like "Centerfold" and "Love Stinks." It was raw, sweaty and as real as rock gets. And, I'll never forget that night...as I'm sure anybody that saw them at Holy Cross in 1972 hasn't.

John Geils departed terra firma earlier this week...but the magic he helped create will be with us always.

On this Music Friday, we remember him with "Serves You Right to Suffer / Lookin' For a Love" from that blistering show at Holy Cross.
