Joni Mitchell

Hejira_coverI'm not sure why Twitter blew up with tributes earlier this week on the occasion of her successful completion of 74 revolutions around the Sun. Maybe it's because the new biography, Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell, is just out, one in which she finally drops the veils on what was a semi-private life.

Of all the photos, the ones that adorned the album Hejira were always my favorites. Maybe due to the fact that the tracks were long and, as a 6-Midnight DJ, I had longer to linger on her album cover than others in during the winter of '76-'77. Funny that I would call the lake upon which those images were captured home some 40 years later.

From 41 years ago this month, our Music Friday find is Joni's original homage to Amelia Earhart...and, a years later, a sensational retelling with collaborator Vince Mendoza.
